When I was a Sophomore and Junior in college, I spent my summers as a military camp counselor on the beautiful island of Oahu. Throughout my time, I compiled a list of my favorite MUST-DO things when visiting Oahu, Hawaii!
#1- Hike Diamond Head
One thing to know about Hawaii is that people start their day EARLY. To beat the crowd and the heat, it is best to start this hike early in the morning. This state monument opens from 6am-4pm daily except Wednesday’s. The crater is a short, family-friendly paved hike that takes nearly 1-2 hours roundtrip, just 0.8 miles from summit to the top. Bring water and good walking shoes! The view at the top overlooks the Waikiki beach shoreline and buildings- a breathtaking view. In the winter, you might even see Humpback whales. This scenic hike is a must-do!
#2- Visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial and USS Arizona Memorial
This is a must-see when visiting Hawaii and an important piece of United State’s history! The memorial is open from 7am-5pm daily. Like above, get there early as free tickets are served on a limited first come-first serve basis. Take a shuttle to visit the USS Arizona Memorial as well!
#3- Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay
Try snorkeling at the beautiful Hanauma Bay- Hawaii’s state nature preserve. Over 1,00o years ago, an eruption blew out one side of a crater, creating the crescent moon-shaped beach that we have today. This snorkeling experience is INCREDIBLE- with over 300 species of marine life to see! Check out the website for all current rules and regulations for entering the bay.
#4- Waikiki Beach
While this is one of the most touristy- beaches in the world, it is a must-see! So many films and TV shows were filmed here as well! Take a ride on a harbor cruise, a sunset sail, or go parasailing! You will find people walking, running, and riding along the boardwalk stretch. The streets across from the beach are lined with shops and restaurants! Take note of the popular ABC stores that you will find along the streets as many gifts, snacks, souvenirs, + more are available there. There used to be fireworks over the Hilton Lagoon every Friday night, but should be resuming due to COVID.
#5- North Shore
The North Shore to me is one of the greatest places on the island of Oahu! It is a different vibe than the busy, tourist-filled streets of Waikiki. On the way to the North Shore, stop at the Dole Plantation and try their amazing pineapple dole whip! Head to Waimea Bay and spend time on the beautiful, white-sand beach. They have a large rock that many locals jump off of- depending on the tide levels. Across the street from the beach is a short, paved-hike called Waimea Falls, leading to a waterfall! A lot of flowers and various plants are preserved here. Head to the town Haleiwa (Ha-lee-ay-va) for amazing shops and shaved ice! Check out the world-famous Matsumoto’s Shave Ice! 🙂
#6- Luau
It is a MUST when visiting any Hawaiian Island to see a luau! Learn about the history of Polynesian culture/dance, try Hawaiian Food- the Kalua Pig roasted over the fire is amazing. Some of the best on Oahu include Polynesian Cultural Center, Paradise Cove, and Germaine’s. However, you won’t go wrong with the many happening each night!
#7- Sunflower Fields
During the summer months, Waimanalo Farms has a large sunflower patch that is great for taking pictures! A variety of their homemade lemonade flavors are available for purchase! This was such a fun and cheap way to spend an afternoon! They also grow pumpkins in the fall.
#8- Kualoa Ranch
Take time during your stay to check out Kualoa Ranch! This is the home to many movies, TV shows, and videos- such as King Kong, Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, and so many more! Many celebrities have been to this location to film. Here you can ride ATV’s, horses, go on a zipline adventure, boat to a secret island, and so much more. They have packages available to combine more than one activity to spend your day there! Definitely recommend as this is a family-oriented place! Take a tour around the ranch to hear about it’s history and movie sites!
#9- Leonard’s Bakery
Before leaving the island, check out the malasada’s at Leonard’s Bakery. These are Portuguese donuts with cinnamon sugar that melt in your mouth! Get them plain or filled with chocolate, vanilla, or flavor of the day filling!
#10- Swap Meet
The BEST place to get all of your souvenirs! The Swap Meet is a large outdoor market at the Aloha Stadium. For just a buck, you can spend HOURS and LOTS of money here- I know I did ha ha! From t-shirts, to hydroflasks, to bracelets, to paintings, to coffee, snacks, luggage, hats, and so so so much more! This is the place to be! Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays!
If any questions about planning a trip or what things to do together on what day, leave a comment and I can get back to you with tips! Be sure to check on the websites for the most current rules, hours, and policies beforehand. I hope you enjoy Oahu as much as I do! <3
